The Economic Development Committee (EDC) of the Regional Development Council XI, in coordination with the Alliance of Responsible Miners of Region (ARMOR) XI conducted a learning visit at the limestone quarry site of Holcim Mining Development Corporation (HMDC) in Bunawan, Davao City. The activity is part of ARMOR XI’s information, education and communications (IEC) program to impart to stakeholders responsible mining processes. The “Seeing is Believing” Program of ARMOR XI intends for the EDC XI members to experience through first hand exposure in an operating mine, how responsible mining is operationalized and practiced by mining companies in the Region.
The EDC XI participants visited the quarry site where dozing and pushing of limestones were observed, as well as, the restoration site and its rehabilitation areas. HMDC Mining and Operations Manager, Mr. Joel Badang, shared that one of the major contributions of the company, as part of their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives, was the provision of 129 housing units to informal settlers residing in flood-prone area along Ilang River.
During the post-assessment dialogue, DOST XI ARD Elsie Mae Solidum recommended that in rehabilitating the mining site, the company should restore it close to its original state by utilizing endemic tree species. The HMDC responded affirmatively and committed to explore and practice more responsive rehabilitation and restoration activities.
The said activity was very much appreciated by the EDC XI members as this enabled them to witness the actual operations and procedures in a quarry site particularly the company’s efforts in ensuring that responsible mining is practiced.
A sequel activity shall be undertaken in May 2019 at Apex Mines, an underground gold mining operation located in Masara, Maco, Compostela Valley.
